Barabdos Weekly’s Bajan Convos series provides a look into the lives of everyday Barbadians through the lens and written word.

MY NAME IS ARLETTE Worrell and I retire now but I have been selling fish here in Weston, St James on the beach before a market was built here.
I used to live up in the Garden, further up, I live down here now, I move down here in ’95. My mother gave me a board house and I live in it for a couple years and then I take down the board and build wall.
I retired now, but people does tell me that I still look good for my age. I have four children – three sons, three nice boys and a daughter. My children big, they does look after themselves, I don’t got to worry about them. If I say I want something, they would give me, or give me something for my birthday.
I grateful for my little pension and I thank God for that. Every morning I get up I give thanks to him because he is the one who take me through the night and bring me through to see another day. So I have to say thanks to him.
Nowadays you hardly getting any fish. These is jacks, they catch yesterday, $25 for five pounds, that done clean. People love jacks though, some people would eat a jack before they eat a flying fish or dolphin. They love a jack, a jack is a nice fish.
You put them in your lime and salt for five to 10 minutes, wash them off and season them, don’t use too much salt because the seasoning will have in salt, cut a slit here on the sides, put in the season, in this part here that open and in the back, put on your pan with oil, get it hot, get your flour and bread crumbs, put it on [the fish, put it in the pan, lower down the heat and brown on both sides.
You can take a picture of me, I accustom to the paper.
