Barbadian athlete Sada Williams took gold in an effortless run of 49.90 in the Women’s 400M final whilst breaking the standing record as the first woman in the history of the Commonwealth games to go under 50 seconds.
This is the athletes first gold medal from the Commonwealth Games and Barbadians could not be prouder. Screams and shouts could be heard from shops and homes as persons gathered in front of the television watching the race as she took first place and England’s Victoria Ohuruogu took 2nd with a time of 50.72 and Jodie Williams also of England to place third with 51.26.
The athlete said, “Winning the gold medal and getting the championship record. She said, “ I ran the race exactly how I wanted it to be.”
“My 2022 season is not finished yet but so far it has been my best season. She noted coming into this year it was to get out of semis make final and make the medal.”
Williams who now trains with coach Steven Francis in Jamaica described the experience as interesting with excellent training partners.
Barbados Weekly took the time to speak with mum Shernel Williams about her daughter’s victory and gold medal in the Commonwealth games and Bronze medal at the World Championships. She told us, “It was a proud moment, an excited feeling watching her win gold and the bronze medal. I am so proud of her and her achievements.”
